Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi deleted a tweet backing “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett after reports surfaced the January 29 attack may have been a hoax.
Pelosi previously tweeted, “The racist, homophobic attack on [Smollett] is an affront to our humanity. No one should be attacked for who they are or whom they love.”
Smollett is African American and gay, and he claims late last month two Nigerian brothers attacked him yelling, “This is MAGA country,” in addition to other racial and homophobic slurs.
According to Smollett, he was assaulted at an eatery in the middle of the night by two men in ski masks.
Smollett says the men tied a rope around his neck and also poured bleach on him.
Chicago police arrested both of the brothers, one of which was Smollett’s personal trainer.
The pair told authorities Smollett paid them to stage the attack, which officials claim has “shifted the trajectory of the investigation.”
Smollett continues to deny the attack was staged.
