New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signs legislation into law permitting abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
Also known as the Reproductive Health Act, the law allows abortion following the 24-week mark if the woman’s life or health is at all threatened.
The law also permits killing the unborn if there is reason to believe the fetus will not survive, and it allows more medical professionals to perform the act.
In addition, the law also stipulates abortion is now regulated under public health law instead of criminal law.
Cuomo commended the bills passage saying, “With the signing of this bill, we are sending a clear message that whatever happens in Washington, women in New York will always have the fundamental right to control their own body.”
Before the law’s passage, abortion was only allowed to save the mother’s life.
