Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Iraq unexpectedly during his eight-day Middle Eastern visit.
Pompeo arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday to meet with Iraq’s prime minister, foreign minister, and parliament speaker.
The top American diplomat released a tweet shortly after saying the United States looks forward to working with Iraq and advocating its energy independence.
Following the Baghdad visit, Pompeo visited the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in Irbil.
Pompeo reportedly addressed defeating ISIS and countering Iranian aggression with Iraqi officials.
The secretary of state is expected to travel to nine nations during his visit to the Middle East.
