California Attorney General Xavier Becerra warns the White House it will “imminently” challenge President Trump’s emergency declaration to secure funding for the southern border wall.
Becerra made the remarks Sunday saying, “We are prepared, we knew something like this might happen. And with our sister state partners, we are ready to go.”
Both Becerra and California Governor Gavin Newsom are expected to file suit against the Trump administration, with other deep blue states to follow accordingly.
According to Becerra, Democratic officials are waiting to see which federal programs will be affected by the emergency declaration before filing suit.
Becerra’s remarks come just days after President Trump declared a national emergency to secure funding for border wall construction.
Ultimately, President Trump will have $8 billion in funding to allocate for construction.
President Trump previously requested $5.7 billion to build the border wall, but after Congressional debate he was only allocated $1.4 billion.
Declaring the national emergency will give the president access to an additional $6.7 billion.
