“Empire” Actor Jussie Smollett was arrested shortly after turning himself in over allegations he staged a hate crime against himself last month.
Chicago authorities held a news conference Thursday saying the actor is facing a felony charge for reportedly filing a false police report.
One officer slammed the actor during the press conference saying, “Jussie Smolett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.”
According to police, Smollett staged the attack because he was not happy with his salary.
During the news conference, authorities also said Smollett was behind the threatening, racist letter he received at a Fox studio.
Police also said the actor paid the brothers, who he hired to “attack” him, $3,500.
Smollet turned himself him early Thursday morning, one day after he was charged with a class four felony.
The actor could be behind bars for three years if convicted.
