Democratic lawmakers in the upper chamber introduced a bill which would allow DACA recipients to take paid positions working on Capitol Hill.
Senators Kamala D. Harris, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Dick Durbin introduced the American Dream Employment Act Wednesday, which pushes for job options for Dreamers in Congress.
Current law only allows American citizens or individuals with permanent residency status on the pathway to citizenship to work in Congress.
Senator Harris issued a statement regarding the move saying, “Our nation’s DREAMers are some of our best and brightest, and it’s time they had the opportunity to get a job or paid internship on Capitol Hill.”
Other versions of the bill have not made it far on Capitol Hill after being introduced both in 2016 and 2017.
The move comes just months after a Democratic lawmaker first introduced the bill back in January.
