Florida State Senate Passes Bill Banning Sanctuary Cities

The Florida State Senate passes legislation which will ban sanctuary cities across the state.

The state’s upper chamber passed the bill in a 22 to 18 vote on Thursday shortly before Governor Ron DeSantis tweeted his support of the measure.

DeSantis tweeted saying, “I thank the Florida Legislature for presenting me with a bill that upholds the rule of law and addresses sanctuary cities and counties in Florida.”

He continued by saying, “We are a stronger state when we protect our residents, foster safe communities and respect the work of law enforcement.”

If the bill becomes law, it will mandate compliance with federal officials’ detainer requests involving individuals who may be undocumented.

The legislation now heads to the governor’s desk where he is expected to sign it into law.
