Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Russia next week in an effort to strengthen bilateral ties, according to the State Department.
State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus made the announcement Friday saying Pompeo will arrive in Moscow on May 13.
The statement went on to say Pompeo is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to “discuss the full range of bilateral and multilateral challenges.”
Before meeting with Putin and Lavrov, Pompeo is slated to meet with various officials in Moscow at the American embassy.
The upcoming meeting was announced just days after President Trump said he spoke with Putin on the phone last week which he dubbed a “very productive” discussion.
President Trump said the pair discussed the “Russia Hoax” and Russian interference in the last presidential election.
