British Supreme Court Says Parliament Suspension ‘Unlawful’

The British Supreme Court issued a ruling Tuesday calling Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend parliament amid Brexit turmoil "unlawful."

The U.K.’s highest court ruled Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament for five weeks was “unlawful.”

Brenda Hale, the court’s most senior judge and de-facto chairwoman, said the court was bound to conclude the decision to advise Queen Elizabeth II to prorogue parliament “was unlawful because it had the affect of frustrating or preventing the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification.”
