The lower chamber is set to vote on a resolution to set the ground rules for an impeachment inquiry targeting the White House.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the announcement Monday in a letter to her colleagues suggesting the move will clarify the ongoing efforts to ramp up impeachment efforts against President Trump
According to the letter, “This resolution establishes the procedure for hearings that are open to the American people, authorizes the disclosure of deposition transcripts, outlines procedures to transfer evidence to the Judiciary Committee as it considers potential articles of impeachment, and sets forth due process rights for the President and his Counsel.”
The letter continued, “We are taking this step to eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump Administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives.”
Essentially, the resolution will establish the bounds of the ongoing investigation as Republicans continue to blast their leftist counterparts, calling for more transparency amid the efforts.
Democrats have been holding closed-door hearings for weeks and, according to their GOP counterparts, have been politically motivated from the start.
According to a Fox News report, the vote formalizing the impeachment inquiry is likely to take place on Thursday.
Republicans weighed in on the announcement Monday slamming Pelosi for her decision while questioning the legitimacy of the investigation.
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise weighed in on the move saying, “It’s all Adam Schiff’s personal show to try to build a case of innuendo because they don’t have any real facts.”
Meanwhile, Florida Representative Matt Gaetz also slammed the left for the announcement via twitter saying, “Speaker Pelosi’s announcement today acknowledges Adam Schiff’s free-wheeling impeachment inquiry is devoid of rules and lacks legitimacy.”
President Trump has repeatedly dismissed the ongoing efforts as a “witch hunt” while claiming the call with the Ukrainian president, which prompted the impeachment efforts, was flawless.
The president has repeatedly addressed the call on twitter suggesting the “impeachment hoax” is nothing but a disgrace to the country and American people.
